My PortfolioAbout Me:
My Name is Nelli Orozco and I'm a North American English Teaching Assistant from Reading, Pennsylvania. Education: I studied at Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania. I majored in Spanish Education PK-12. I then took my official Spanish Education certification exams to become a certified Spanish teacher in the state of Pennsylvania. Expectations of LA Program and Final Project Topic I wish to focus on the topic Mindfulness as my final project through MOOC. I look forward to teaching my students this year about the world of Mindfulness and how developing this skill can make them better citizens of the world. As a language assistant I hope to teach my students about North American culture and aid them in improving their English skills through fun, insightful and animated lessons. Having studied to become a language teacher I know a lot about how to teach a language and I look forward to seeing my students progress with the English skills as the year goes on! School Placement: Currently, I am placed at El Encinar at the primary school level. It is located in the town of Torrelodones, about 25 minutes away via bus from the city of Madrid. My school is a medium sized school found in an affluent suburb in the outskirts of Madrid. My school is known for its Occupational Therapy program which aims at helping to develop skills of mobility impaired students. Teaching Experience: I teach a variety of different grades at El Encinar including:
My Language Assistant Goal: As a language assistant my goal is to help the students improve their English skills in all areas. I hope to share my culture with them along the way! I want to create mutual understanding between my country, USA and their country of Spain and through this showcase to them that we are more similar than different and together! Activities Developed: As a language assistant I've created many presentations focusing on the cultural aspect of my country. I have taught my students about Halloween and Thanksgiving. I look forward to sharing with them about more holidays celebrated in the US. Also, I create review games for the students right before their exams. This way they can practice reviewing material for an exam in a fun and engaging matter! I create unique collaborative games that allows them to work in teams and with each other in order to get to a final answer! I reward the winning teams with stickers which they love! Finally, I have the opportunity to work with my students in small groups which allows me to give more one on one time to all students in the classroom. Through this individualized attention I can help my students improve their English skills on a more personal level. My Contributions: As a language assistant I have been able to add "fun" into the classroom. Whenever my students see me they are excited because they know that we are going to do something engaging! They look forward to my cultural presentations review games. As mentioned before, I studied language learning, which allows me to understand the most effective ways for my students to learn the English language. Highlights: Some of the highlights of this experience for me as a Language Assistant has been seeing my students improve as time goes on! Seeing their "lightbulb moments" in which whatever they are learning finally "clicks" fills me with an overwhelming amount of joy and pride! I love seeing them learn and use what they are learning whenever they speak to me! Another moment that will forever stick with me was when I gave my students a presentation on the state of Florida. After this presentation one of my 5th of primary students gave me a sweet photo album with her photo and a message that described how I motivated her to become fluent in English so she could one day visit Florida in the US and see all the wonderful sites I mentioned in my presentation! This moment brought me to tears because I knew I had made an impact on her motivation and life! |
